MASTER OF ARTS and MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREES by COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH

ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR MA COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH

  • Special Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject with a second class upper or above pass and passing a maximum of 2 qualifying papers or 2 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not more than 2,
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject with a class, and passing a minimum of 2 qualifying papers or 2 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 2,
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject and passing a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4,
  • A merit pass at the relevant Postgraduate Diploma offered by PGIAR,
  • Professional or any other qualification recognized by the Board of management of PGIAR and accepted by the senate of the University of Kelaniya. Such candidates will be required to pass a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4,
  • Professional qualifications approved by the UGC for admission to masters program in the Universities and Higher Educational Institutions in Sri Lanka. Such candidates will be required to pass a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4.

Note: Academic qualifications and requirements for admission to Master of Arts Degree Program (Course Work and Research):

In exceptional cases the PGIAR would consider admitting a person with outstanding notable achievements in practice-based experience in archaeology or archaeology related fields for a Master of Arts Degree (Course Work and Research) even when such a person does not possess the qualifications and requirements mentioned above. Such candidates will however be required to submit an ‘Application for Non Degree Program’ and then sit for 5 qualifying papers and obtain ‘B’ grades or above for each paper before being offered admission to the Master of Arts (Course Work and Research) Degree Program.

ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR MSC COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH

  • Special Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant subject/s with a second class upper or above, and passing a maximum number of 2 qualifying papers or 2 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not exceeding 2, or
  • A merit pass at the relevant Postgraduate Diploma offered by PGIAR, or
  • An ordinary pass in the relevant Postgraduate Diploma offered by the PGIAR and 5 years of professional field experience in the relevant subject.
  • Applicants must demonstrate satisfactorily their involvement in archaeology or in a related subject at professional level by submitting relevant documents and two letters of recommendation by recognized professionals in archaeology or the related field
  • In order to gain admission to the MSc Degree in Archaeology applicants should demonstrate that they are in a position to envision a professional career in   archaeology at the interview with the Graduate Review Committee of PGIAR.
  • Preference will be given to those who are employed or working in the field of   archaeology, archaeological science, managing heritage or those who can demonstrate an aptitude for archaeology related field/ lab research, or those who can present a convincing research interest in a branch of archaeology by way of a comprehensive research plan accompanied with a research synopsis.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS APPLICABLE TO MSC APPLICANTS

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MA/MSC DEGREE

Two and Half Years [5 Semesters] | 20 Credits by Taking the Prescribed Course Units + 40 Credits for the 7500 to 10000 MA/ MSc. Thesis with a B- Grade + Viva Voce  + B Grades for 3 to 4 Thematic Electives + Satisfactory Pass for the Mandatory Field Experience Period* of 30 (for MA) / 90 (for MSc) Days + Minimum GPA of 2.70

*The mandatory FEP should be carried out under a qualified archaeologist who is a member of the Sri Lanka Council of Archaeologists.
