COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

The main objective of the MA in Archaeology is to train specialists who can envision an independent professional career in writing about archaeology. It also intends to train graduates with a strong capability for teaching archaeology at University level.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

2.1. Special Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject with a second classupper or above pass and passing a maximum of 2 qualifying papers or 2 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not more than 2

or                                                                                                     

2.2. Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject with a class, and passing a minimum of 2 qualifying papers or 2 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 2,

or

2.3. Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject and passing a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4

or

2.4. A merit pass at the relevant Postgraduate Diploma offered by PGIAR,

or

2.5. Professional or any other qualification recognized by the Board of management of PGIAR and accepted by the senate of the University of Kelaniya. Such candidates will be required to pass a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4.

or

2.6. Professional qualifications approved by the UGC for admission to masters program in the Universities and Higher Educational Institutions in Sri Lanka. Such candidates will be required to pass a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4.

NOTE: ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE PROGRAM (COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH):

In exceptional cases the PGIAR would consider admitting a person with outstanding notable achievements in practice-based experience in archaeology or archaeology related fields for a Master of Arts Degree (Course Work and Research) even when such a person does not possess the qualifications and requirements mentioned at 2.2 or 2.3 or 2.4 or 2.5 or 2.6 such candidates will however be required to submit an ‘Application for Non Degree Program’ and then sit 5 qualifying papers and obtain ‘B’ grades or above for each paper before being offered admission to the Master of Arts (Course Work and Research) Degree Program

DURATION: Two and half years (5 semesters).

MEDIUM: English and Sinhala

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 60

COURSE STRUCTURE:

SEMESTER 1:

MAAR 61014 History of archaeological and art historical thought/ compulsory/ 4 credits

MAAR 61024 Field and lab methods in archaeology/ compulsory/ 4 credits

SEMESTER 2:

MAAR 62034 Themes and theories in contemporary archaeology/ compulsory/ 4 credits

SEMESTER 3:

MAAR 71044 Ancient technology / compulsory/ 4 credits

SEMESTER 4:

MAAR 72054 Managing heritage/ compulsory/ 4 credits

MAFEP Field Experience Period: 30 days/compulsory/ must complete before the end of the 4th semester of the program.

Total number of credits earned by taught course units:  20

Number of credits earned by satisfactory completion of the MS thesis: 40

Total number of credits earned for the fulfillment of requirements for the award of the Master of Arts Degree in Archaeology: 60 (20+40)

AWARD OF THE MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE IN ARCHAEOLOGY

PASS

A candidate is eligible for the Master of Arts Degree in Archaeology if he/she

I. obtains grades of B or better in each of the course unit offered and achieves a minimum GPA of 3 and satisfactorily completes the mandatory field experience period,

and

II. completes the relevant requirements within a maximum period of three academic years.

MERIT PASS

A candidate shall be awarded a Merit Pass provided he/she

I. obtains grades of B+ or better in each of the course units offered and achieves a minimum GPA of 3.3

And

II. completes the relevant requirements in the first attempt

        DISTINCTION PASS

A candidate shall be awarded a Distinction Pass provided he/she

I. obtains grades of ‘A’ or better in each of the course units offered and achieve a minimum GPA of 4.

and

II. completes the relevant requirements in the first attempt.

The course fee can be paid in two installments. The first installment of Rs. 30,000 should be paid with the registration. The remaining Rs. 20,000 must be paid before commencement of second academic year.
