MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN ARCHAEOLOGY |MSAR

COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

The main objective of the MSc. is to train archaeologists who can envision a professional career in archaeology.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

       Special Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant subject/s with a second class upper or above, and passing a maximum number of 2 qualifying papers or 2 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not exceeding 2,

or

      A merit pass at the relevant Postgraduate Diploma offered by PGIAR,

      or

      An ordinary pass in the relevant Postgraduate Diploma offered by the PGIAR and 5 years of professional field experience in the relevant subject.

PRE-REQUISITES OR OTHER CONDITIONS PERTAINING TO ADMISSION CRITERIA:

  Applicants must demonstrate satisfactorily their involvement in archaeology or in a related subject at professional level by submitting relevant documents and two letters of recommendation by recognized professionals in archaeology or the related field. Candidate are required to sit for an interview with the panel appointed by the Graduate Review Committee of PGIAR.

DURATION: Two and half years (5 semesters).

MEDIUM: English and Sinhala

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 60

COURSE STRUCTURE:

Semester 1:

MSAR 61014 History of archaeological and art historical thought/ compulsory/ 4 credits

MSAR 61024 Field and lab methods in archaeology/ compulsory/ 4 credits

Semester 2:

MSAR 62034 Themes and theories in contemporary archaeology/ compulsory/ 4 credits

Semester 3:

MSAR 71044 Ancient technology / compulsory/ 4 credits

Semester 4:

MSAR 72054 Managing heritage/ compulsory/ 4 credits

MSFEP Field Experience Period: 90 days/compulsory/ must complete before the end of  the 4th semester of the program.

Total number of credits earned by taught course units: 20

Number of credits earned by satisfactory completion of the MS thesis: 40

Total number of credits earned for the fulfillment of requirements for the award of the   Master of Science Degree in Archaeology: 60 (20+40)

AWARD OF THE MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN ARCHAEOLOGY

PASS

A candidate is eligible for the Master of Science Degree in Archaeology if he/she

I. obtains grades of B or better in each of the course units offered and achieves a minimum GPA of 3 and satisfactorily completes the mandatory field experience period,

and

II. completes the relevant requirements within a maximum period of three academic years.

MERIT PASS

A candidate shall be awarded a Merit Pass provided he/she

I. obtains grades of B+ or better in each of the course units offered and achieves a  minimum GPA of 3.3,

and

II. completes the relevant requirements in the first attempt

 DISTINCTION PASS

A candidate shall be awarded a Distinction Pass provided he/she

I. obtains grades of ‘A’ or better in each of the course units offered and achieves a minimum GPA of 4.

and

      II. completes the relevant requirements in the first attempt.

The course fee can be paid in two installments. The first installment of Rs. 30,000 should be paid with the registration. The remaining Rs. 20,000 must be paid before commencement of second academic year.

  • Certified copy of Birth certificate
  • Certified copy of transcript of the degree
