MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE| MP BY RESEARCH

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE MPHIL COURSES

The main objective of the MPhil courses is to train candidates who can envision an independent research and writing career without supervision in one of the following specializations offered at PGIAR:

  1. ARCHAEOLOGY (AR)
  2. MUSEOLOGY (MU)
  3. HERITAGE (HR)
  4. ART HISTORY (AH)

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Special Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject with a second class upper or above, and passing a maximum number of 4 qualifying papers or 4 course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not exceeding 4,
  • Two year Master of Arts Degree (Research or Taught) in a relevant subject and passing a maximum number of 3 qualifying papers or course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not exceeding 3,
  • One year Master of Arts Degree (Research or Taught) in a relevant subject and passing a minimum of 4 qualifying papers or course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not less than 4, or
  • Two year Master of Science Degree (Course Work and Research) in a relevant subject and passing a maximum number of 3 qualifying papers or course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not exceeding 3, or
  • Two year Master of Arts Degree (Course Work and Research) in a relevant subject and passing a maximum number of 3 qualifying papers or course work assignments or a combination of qualifying papers and course work assignments not exceeding 3.
    • Certified copy of Birth certificate
    • Certified copy of transcript of the degree
    • Stamp size (3cm « 2 1$2 cm) two photographs

DURATION: Two years (6 Semesters)

MEDIUM: English and Sinhala

NUMBER OF CREDITS: 60

COURSE STRUCTURE

This is a 60-credit, 5-semester research degree program.

The MPhil Degree Consists no taught courses, however considering the candidate’s research interests 4 to 5 thematic electives will be required to take as would be approved by the Boards of Study of PGIAR.

Number of credits earned from satisfactory completion of the MPhil thesis is 60.

Total number of credits earned for the fulfillment of requirements for the Master of Philosophy Degree: 60

THEMATIC ELECTIVES

At the successful completion of the elective the candidate should have gained a sufficient understanding of the thematic in relation to her/his research interests.

The above fee can be paid in two installments. The first installment of Rs. 70,000 should be paid with the registration. The remaining Rs. 60, 000 must be paid before the commencement of the second academic year.

EVALUATION OF CANDIDATES AND THE AWARD OF THE MPHIL DEGREE

Candidates are required to secure 60 credits by obtaining a minimum B+ grade for the thesis of 20000 to 35000 words. Candidates are also required to obtain B+ grades for qualifying papers or course work assignments, the viva-voce examination, comprehensive examination, thematic electives and satisfactory pass for the mandatory field experience period of 60 days. Candidates who fulfill the requirements given here shall be recommended to the senate of the University of Kelaniya for the award of the MPhil Degree in Archaeology or Museology or Heritage or Art History as relevant.
