Message from the Acting Director
Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR)
University of Kelaniya
It is with great pleasure that I convey this message on behalf of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR), University of Kelaniya - the premier institution in Sri Lanka dedicated to advancing postgraduate education, research, and professional training in archaeology and related disciplines.
Since its establishment in 1986, the PGIAR has played a pivotal role in nurturing generations of scholars, researchers, and professionals who have contributed immensely to the study, preservation, and promotion of our nation’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage. Through its wide range of academic programs - including Postgraduate Diplomas, MA, MSc, MPhil, and PhD degrees the Institute continues to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence and intellectual integrity.
The PGIAR remains steadfast in its mission to create a vibrant environment for interdisciplinary learning and innovation in fields such as archaeology, museology, heritage management, and art history. The institute’s commitment to quality teaching and impactful research is reflected in the growing number of postgraduate students, collaborative projects, and international linkages.
Looking ahead, our focus is on further strengthening the academic and research culture by enhancing facilities, modernizing laboratories, and integrating new technologies and methodologies in archaeological study. We believe that by fostering an enabling environment for both students and the institute, the PGIAR will continue to attract talented individuals from across Sri Lanka and beyond, inspiring them to contribute to the protection and interpretation of our shared heritage.
As we move forward, I wish to acknowledge the dedication of our academic and administrative staff, whose tireless efforts sustain the high standards of scholarship and professionalism for which the PGIAR is known. Together, we will continue to build upon the institute’s proud legacy and ensure that it remains a beacon of excellence in postgraduate education and research in archaeology.
