Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) | PH

The main objective of the PhD courses is to train specialists who can engage in high quality research in one of the specialization offered at PGIAR.

  • Duration: Minimum - 3 years, Maximum - 6 years, Extension - 1 year beyond the max. period

  • Medium: English and Sinhala

  • Number of Credits: 90 credits 

     

1. Two-year Master of Philosophy (Research) Degree in a relevant Subject

or

2. Two-year Master of Art (Taught or Research or Coursework and Research) Degree in a relevant subject and passing of a minimum of 3 qualifying papers or Qualifying Course Units offered in PGIAR’s degree programs or a combination of qualifying papers and Course Units not less than 3.

or

3. Two-year Master of Science (Course Work and Research) Degree in a relevant subject and passing of a minimum of 3 qualifying papers or Qualifying Course Units offered in PGIAR’s degree programs or a combination of qualifying papers and Course Units not less than 3.

Note 1: The relevant subjects are as follows:

For Archaeology: archaeology, history, geology, geography; for Museology: archaeology, history, anthropology, tourism, fine arts, science (chemistry, biology, botany); for Heritage: archaeology, history, art history, anthropology, architecture, science (chemistry, physics, botany, zoology), engineering, technology, management; for Art History: archaeology, design, anthropology, architecture, literature, Languages, sociology, fine arts, history

Note2: Those applicants who are deemed necessary to take Qualifying Course Units by the Boards of Study of the PGIAR shall be required to register in the specified Course Units offered by the PGIAR in its Postgraduate Diploma or MSc programs.

Note3: Applicants seeking admission to the PhD program who have not obtained a MPhil degree in a relevant subject (applicants applying under 3.2, or 3.3)  shall not be admitted directly to the PhD program but will initially be registered as MPhil leading to PhD (MPhil/PhD).

7.1 This is a 90 credit, 6-semester research degree.

7.2 The Degree program Consists no taught courses
Number of credits earned from satisfactory completion of the thesis is 90.

7.3 Completion of Field Experience Period of 90 days.

  • Certified copy of Birth certificate
  • Certified copy of transcript of the degree
  • Stamp size (3cm x  4.5 cm) two photographs

Rs. 2500, International Candidate USD 20

Registration fee

Rs. 5000, International Candidate USD 25

Total Course Fee

Rs. 400,000, International Candidate USD 3500 (USD 2000+USD 1500)

The course fee can be paid in four installments. The first installment of Rs. 100,000.00 should be paid with the registration. The second installment of 100,000.00 should be paid before the commencement of the second academic year. The remaining Rs. 100,000 must be paid before the commencement of the third academic year and Rs. 100,000.00 must be paid before end of the third academic year.

*For the candidates who are currently working at permanent positions at Central Cultural Fund, Department of Archaeology and Department of National Museum are applicable to follow up below payment structure.

The above fee can be paid in four installments. The first installment of Rs. 100,000 should be paid with the registration. The 2nd installment Rs. 100,000 must be paid before the commencement of the second academic year. The final installments of Rs.150, 000.00 should be paid before submitting the thesis.

*Note: If the respective Institute pays on behalf of the student they are obliged to pay the full course fee of Rs.400, 000/=.

About Us

The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) was established on the 1st January 1986, by order dated 18th December 1985, under section 24A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 by the University Grants Commission. The PGIAR is a Postgraduate Institute of the University of Kelaniya. It is the prime institution for postgraduate studies and research in archaeology and subjects related to archaeology in the country.
