POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE | MCAH

The main objective of the Diploma is to provide a learning platform for any person with any academic background to enter the field of art history and related subjects. As such the Diploma functions as a conversion program for those whose academic background is not art history. The main intellectual objective of the program is to train the interested candidates academically ready to undertake higher-level academic and research training in art history.

  • Duration: One year

  • Medium: English and Sinhala

  • Number of Credits: 30 credits 

  • Lecturing: On Classroom & Distance Learning 

1. Bachelor’s degree in (Archaeology/Architecture/ Museology/ Civil Engineering/History/Fine Arts/Geography) awarded by a recognized university,
                                      or
2. Professional or any other such qualification recognized by the Board of Management of PGIAR, and approved by the Senate of the University of Kelaniya. Following qualifications can be considered under this provision for admission to Postgraduate Diploma Programs of PGIAR:
          1) Four year Higher National Diploma (HND) offered by the Ministry of Education;
          2) Praacheena Panditha Avasana and
          3) Attorney at Law qualification from the Law College of Sri Lanka, or a postgraduate diploma in any discipline from a recognized institution.
                                      or
3. Minimum of 10 years sustained practice-based experience with notable achievements relevant to the subject matter of the diploma at executive/ managerial level in recognized institutions or workplace or at the public level. Strong written recommendations on the capacity of the candidate to undertake the program of study from specialists in the field will also be considered. See note below for the definition of notable achievements.

Candidates are required to demonstrate their professional track record for over 10 years after age 20. Supporting materials in the form of books, published articles, newspaper write-ups, catalogues, posters, portfolios, video films, music scores, project proposals written by the candidate; social activity records of the candidate and three recommendation letters from specialists in the field are required. Two of the recommendations should come from specialists who are not academic staff members of any Sri Lankan university. Recommendations cannot come from either the faculty of PGIAR, or any faculty member whose university is represented in the Board of Study or Board of Management of the PGIAR

The Postgraduate Diploma in Art History consists of 6 compulsory Course Units and a compulsory field experience period of 20-days

MCAH 11513 Concepts, Policy and Legislation/ compulsory/ 3 credits
MCAH 11524 Surveying, Recording and Inventoring / compulsory/ 4 credits
MCAH 12537 Technical aspects, Principles and Methodology / compulsory/ 7 credits
MCAH 13553 Conservation Planning and Maintenance/3 credits
MCAH 13563 Management of Heritage Conservation Projects/ 3 credits
MCAH 13576 Individual Practical Project/7 credits

Total number of credits earned for the fulfilment of requirements for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Management And Conservation of Archaeological Heritage: 30

  • Certified copy of the Birth certificate
  • Certified copy of the transcript of the degree
  • Stamp size (3cm x  2 1/2 cm) two photographs

Total Course Fee

Rs. 50,000 International Candidate USD 750 (USD500 + USD 250)

The course fee can be paid in three instalments. The first instalment of Rs. 10,000 should be paid with the registration. The remaining amount is Rs. 20,000 & Rs.20, 000 must be paid before the examination of Duruthu and vesak semester.

The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) was established on the 1st January 1986, by order dated 18th December 1985, under section 24A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 by the University Grants Commission. The PGIAR is a Postgraduate Institute of the University of Kelaniya. It is the prime institution for postgraduate studies and research in archaeology and subjects related to archaeology in the country.
