This Gold Medal is named in honour of Dr. Siran Upendra Deraniyagala, a pioneering figure in South Asian prehistory whose research reshaped understanding of early human settlement in Sri Lanka. Through meticulous excavations and scientific dating methods, Dr. Deraniyagala established firm chronological frameworks for Sri Lanka’s prehistoric and protohistoric periods. His work integrated archaeology with geology, palaeoenvironmental studies, and anthropology.
The medal recognises outstanding achievement in Pre and Proto History, reflecting Deraniyagala’s commitment to scientific rigour and interdisciplinary research.
A student with the highest marks (not less than 85% - A+ Pass) for Pre and Proto History subject (PGD in Archaeology). In case more than one student is eligible for the award, select the student with the highest overall total marks for all subjects.
The Gold Medal shall be awarded annually at the General Convocation of the University, upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies, the Board of Management and approval of the Senate.
